Matheson Hammock Park is located south of downtown Miami is among the top-rated flat-water spots along the Eastern U.S. seaboard, providing the ultimate mix of warm, tropical, palm-tree paradise and perfect sessions combined with the nearby urban excitement of Miami.
Known as a spot great for learning the sport or a playground for pros, ASM-Matheson hosts some of the best butter-flat riding, and offers some of the greatest versatility when it comes to wind direction.
For those taking lessons, our expert group of IKO/PASA certified instructors have everything you need to learn efficiently, and get you up and riding safely. We offer lessons to suit all levels, from beginners wanting to try out the sport, to advanced riders looking to improve on their tricks or get a refresher in the latest kite gear. Being part of the Neil Pryde Group, we teach only with the latest kites and technologies and emphasize safety along every step of the way so you can be a confident, independent rider. When you complete your lessons, you also receive an IKO card so you can certify your progress. We are well-equipped with new gear and provide you with the latest in water-wear for your lessons.
For intermediate, advanced and professional riders, the spot offers lots of space for letting loose. We also organize epic downwinder options in Biscayne Bay, Stiltsville, and the nearby Keys, complete with boat-support or van transport. We also offer a special water-taxi service that takes you to Miami's famous Stiltsville and Biscayne Bay's safety-valve flats for day-sessions. Kiting and learning with ASM-Matheson promises unique nature adventures in a tropical paradise, located only a stone's throw away from the vibrant international flavors of Miami and the Keys.
For those calmer days, ASM-Matheson also offers kayak and stand-up paddle-board rentals, providing fun, outdoor activities to accommodate non-kiting friends and family too.
WINDS
We typically get sea-breezes with the occasional storm fronts during the summer season, usually from June to September.
During our windy season typically from October to May/June, we get consistent northeasterly to southeasterly winds. And the occasional winter fronts that crank out solid west and northwest winds provide the perfect opportunity to ride Stiltsville, or organize a bayside downwinder.

DIRECTIONS TO ASM-MATHESON CONCESSION
Address: 9610 Old Cutler Road, Miami, FL 33156
From Miami International:
Take 836 East towards the beaches.
Take I-95 South and continue to the end, where it turns to US1 South.
Take a LEFT at SW 42nd St./Le Jeune Rd. and continue for about 2 miles.
At the traffic circle, take the SECOND EXIT onto Old Cutler Rd.
Stay on that road for approximately 3 miles until you see the intersection for Matheson Hammock Park.
Take a LEFT into the Park. It will cost $6 (cash only) per vehicle before 4:30pm.
Continue past the guard booth and at the fork, stay to the left (head towards Red Fish Grill).
When you reach the parking lot, look for the ASM concession trailer located at the north east corner of the lot.

An introductory lesson designed to give you a solid foundation of basic kiting skills

Youll be given a complete understanding of how the wind works, including how to determine its speed and direction and the wind window. Youll next learn about different types of kites and their components, in particular their safety features, and how to set up 4 and 5-line kites. Well then go into launching and landing techniques and basic piloting skills, and, most importantly, kiting safety and self-rescue techniques.

The next phase to get you on the board and riding (6 hours, $660)
Well start with an overall recap of the kite components, launching and landing techniques, and basic piloting (8 figures). Then, an in-depth study of the bar, testing the kites security devices and twisting and un-twisting the lines will be covered. Youll next learn advanced piloting skills, which will entail power strokes, body dragging, one-handed piloting and kite recovery. Finally, you will be introduced to the board and basic riding techniques, enabling you to get up and going on your own.

Rider Certification
Become an IKO certified rider! Riders are certified according to their skill level which allows instructors, schools, shops and kiteboarding spots to be aware of your capabilities. Some kitesurfing spots and rental stores may require you to be an advanced certified rider in order to rent equipment or ride on their beach. Anyone seeking to obtain IKO insurance will need to be a certified advance rider as well.
Wind Addict certifies all their students for free once they complete the lessons. Your instructor will update your skill level as you progress on your lessons and skills. If you are not a student of Wind Addict the certification is available to you for $30.
Some of the skills required to become an advanced rider are:
-Be able to body drag up wind to recover the board.
-Self rescue

What is Kite Boarding?
Kiteboarding or kitesurfing is a surface water sport that uses wind power to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or kiteboard.

Wakeboarding
Wakeboarding: One of the most difficult parts of learning kiteboarding is the water start. That’'s way we have include wakeboarding lesson on the kiteboarding lessons plan. We'’ll teach all you need to learn and improve your board skills.
If you already know how to wakeboard, and just want to wakeboard or work on yours riding on hook skills; we'’ll have the boat available any time you want.

Kiteboarding is our focus on these charters, but we also offer lots of activities for non-kiters including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUPs), snorkeling (bring your gear!), sailing, fishing (in the Bahamas only), island excursions, and diving*.

IKO Kiteboarder Insurance
Apply to the yearly worldwide insurance by IKO that will cover property damage and body injury caused by the member while participating kitesurfing, Snowkiting or powerkiting.
IKO insurance will cover you up to $1.000.000 in property damage and body injury cause by the insured. For general liability $1000 deductible and for accident / medical $10.000 / $25.000.

-SE Wind
South East Wind is Side of shore. Because the direction of the wind and the position of the land, the wind will create a wind shadow on land or short. The wind shadow effect it will make the wind feel lest strong; about 5 to 8 knots. To prevent any accident make sure you check the wind speed, before you chose the size of the kite. Beginners have to keep their self on the up wind side of the sandbar. Do not go to the deep side of the beach (Any North and west side of the beach) see the beach picture.
-S Wind
South wind is off shore wind. South wind Conditions are not good for Matheson hammock Park. The wind has to travel thought the land before it gets into the beach. Wind tent to have wirthpools and wind rolls because the obstacles on the land and is not a save wind to kite on this park. We do not recommend kiting on these conditions
Safety for Matheson Hammock Park
-N Wind
North wind is off shore wind North wind conditions are not good for Matheson hammock Park. The wind has to travel thought the land before it gets into the beach. Wind tent to have wirthpools and wind rolls because the obstacles on the land and is not a save wind to kite on this park. We do not recommend kiting on these conditions.
-NE Wind
North East direction is on shore wind, ride able wind direction for Matheson Hammock. Wind will be gusty. Lunching and landing are very critical on this wind. A gust could take you in to the parking area. My recommendation is that the lunching and the landing have to be at least 2 times the distance of lines to prevent any accident. As soon go up wind. On the west side of the sandbar ends no good for beginners.
-E Wind
East wind is side on shore. This wind is excellent for Matheson Hammock Park. Downwind of the beach would be the deep side or the channel of the sandbar. If you are not an advance rider, do not go to the deep side or the channel in the west side of the beach. Lunching and landing are save, because if there are any strong gust wont take you into the land.
